Excerpts from Sunday Inquirer Magazine 2006

REVEREND Fr, Jacob Gnalian has treated about 400 snake victims in his native India. “All got well except one, which I did not want to accept because it was already too late.”

Fr Gnalian is no ordinary doctor, but a practitioner of the ancient healing system known as ayurveda.

The catholic priest and ayurveda doctor has been practicing in the Philippines for the past four years. Through the use of ayurvedic medicines, diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes, he says that difficult illnesses like diabetic, asthma, arthritis and hypertension can be cured.

Fr. Gnalian was born in Kerala, India in the 1940’s, According to him both his mother and father had a special talent in medicine. “They have secret herbal medicines, and its part of ayurveda but not the classic ayurveda, “ Fr, Gnalian explains. “My mother can cure hepatitis in three days, and my grandfather can heal different ailments like wounds and poisoning.” They got their healing knowledge from their ancestors, who passed it on to them, just as it was to conveyed to them by their ascendants.

Needed expertise

“ I was interested from the very beginning because I saw all that,” He explains, He saw for instance, how his grandfather healed bad cases of burning, Today, Fr. Gnalian relatives are his patients too. “ My mother is taking my prescribed medicines, and my bother-in-law who is highly diabetic, has been taking my prescription for four years, and now he is ok.”

When Fr. Gnalian goes on one of his yearly trips to India, he makes his diagnoses and prescription for family members who need his expertise, His siblings, three boys and tree girls, two of them are now religious sisters, are all based in India.

Gnalian’s birthplace of Kerala is asouthern state of India considered to be the center of Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old Vedic healing system

“Kerala is the strongest Christian community in the world” he says, “One of Christ’s apostles, St. Thomas went to India in 52 AD and started preaching the Christian message in South India, particularly in Kerela.” St Thomas supposedly establish seven churches and communities there, which allowed the Christian faith to flourish.

Since his elementary days. Fr Gnalian had felt the desire to “serve the people.” That is my mission,” he says. Priesthood naturally came next, since for him it was the best way to fulfill his mission,

In the seminary, Fr Gnalian thoroughly studied the scripture and the mission of Christ. “While studying the scriptur, I learned that mission of Christ is healing – he didn’t spend so much time in the temple, he was always with the people, preaching to them and performing holistic healing , “ Christ healed the people of their physical, mental an spiritual afflictions. Likewise, the ayurvedic approach is not limited to looking at the symptoms of the patients, “but looking at the patient as a whole, to see the cause of the problem.”

Priest and doctor

Fr. Gnalian’s acharya (guru) was a Carmelite brother and doctor of ayurveda. When Fr. Gnalian was assigned to the brothers hospital for his pastoral experience , he got interested in the study, and began to learn from him. “I was under an acharya when I was in the seminary, and I learned Ayurveda as I studied for the priesthood, “Fr Gnalian recounts.

When he finished his studies, he began practicing Ayurveda. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1971 by His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Parecatil, Archbishop of Ernaculam, Kerala. As a priest and doctor, he would say mass at the church, then see his patients after wards. He did this for about 14 years until he moved to the Philippines in 1984 for pastoral work and for higher studies in philosophy an theology.

He was requested to come on a mission by the bishop of San Pablo. While in San Pablo, he pursued and completed an MA Degreee in oriental religious and cultures at the University of Sto Tomas. He remembers, “ I came to San Pablo to perish work in the diocese of Laguna; but when the mission was over, I felt that I was not complete, so now I do this, “ he says with a smile” He completed his doctorate thesis in Vedic Philosophy, the root of Ayurveda, also at UST, While serving as chaplain of various poor communities in Metro Manila.

Driven by his since desire to help people, Fr. Gnalian started the Missionaries of the East in the Philippines. He was a member of the Missionaries of the East in India. It is religious organization that aims “ to continue Christ’s mission in fullness, that is, to heal the people through a holistic healing process.” The local organization currently has priests and laymen members.

Unusual clinic hours

In 2001, he establish the Sandhi Ayurveda clinic in Mandaluyong City, with help of his good friends, the late Rudy dela rama. Sandhi is a research center and health care facility that “offers cure for diseases for which conventional medicines has no effective remedy.”

Sandhi aims “to provide a healthcare program for those who cannot afford other forms of medical treatment due to their high cost.” Fr. Gnalian spends most of his time in the clinic, seeing patients for “as long as they are here,” he says, referring to the absence of usual clinic hours followed by other doctors.

The sandhi Ayurveda clinic brochure states that from the time the clinic opened in 2001, “many patients have been treated by numerous diseases – arthritis, asthma, diabetes, psoriasis,, eczema, and other skin problems, stone in the kidney, dysmenorrhea, eye problem, sinusitis, migraine, hypertension, gastric ulcer and liver disorder; there has been no report of any side effect or complaints.

In the year of 2000 I was diagnosed to have a nervous disorder which had numerous symptoms like palpitations, anxiety attacks, shortness of breath, dizziness etc. The western doctor prescribed me two medicines, one was an anti-depressant and the other was a tranquilizer. She further told me that this condition is a lifetime condition and that I must take these medications forever since two out three cases of these reoccur when medicines are discontinued.

I was overwhelmed by the western doctor’s diagnosis and was left dumbfounded and depressed. Nevertheless, I took the medications and saw her regularly to monitor my progress. Within 6 months of the treatment I felt that most of my symptoms would be controlled when on medication but would immediately come back when I miss the medicine. Along this time I started to develop other problems, some of them were digestive problems, fatigue and lethargy. This went on for two years until I was convinced that the medication I was taking was doing more harm than good and that this could never be a long term solution.

At that time, I was already feeling hopeless and desperate. My old symptoms are back and my digestive problems were getting worse. I found a new doctor who told me that my previous medication was wrong and prescribed me a new medicine. I took his advice and tried the new medication. With only two weeks on the medication I felt constantly nauseous and suffered bouts of vertigo which made me stop the medication and my visits to the new doctor. At this time I have had lost all my options since the two doctors I previously consulted were supposed to be on top of their field. I was also shocked to discover on the internet that numerous groups of people abroad have already formed small communities to fight the manufacturing and distribution of these prescription drugs I was taking. I later on learned to endure living with my symptoms and stop any kind of medication.

Within this year, I also had an endoscopy to check on my digestive complaints. The doctor discovered that I developed a hiatal hernia and said that the only solution to this is surgery. She prescribed a medication to help with the symptom and also changed the medications three times in the span of one year. I took different brands of anti acids and proton pump inhibitors. She said that I either had gastritis, dyspepsia or irritable bowel but did not really give a solution to the problem.

All these years, I have tried most of the medications, supplements, & therapies available in the country without any real solution until I discovered Ayurveda on the internet. For the first time, everything made sense. I learned the importance of knowing my body type and my own unique needs to live in harmony, and that no amount of medication can cure me unless I change my own lifestyle. I took an online Ayurvedic diagnosis and ordered herbal medication in India. With in two months on the Ayurvedic treatment I felt as if a block was taken out of my stomach. I also felt a significant improvement with all my other symptoms and for the first time experience hope in regaining my health back.

Ordering in India proved to be very costly and taxing. It took me almost another year to discover Sandhi Ayurveda Clinic and Father Jacob.

From then on, I have been on a path of continuous detoxification and healing. My bowel movements have become regular, my appetite stronger and I felt energy swelling inside me which I have not felt in years. I have found Father Jacob to be a man of great wisdom, generosity and compassion. Each of my visits proves to be extremely beneficial in all aspects of my life. I consult to him all my physical problems and he always gives sound advice which is based on a thousand year old wisdom of nature. I am also continuously amused to discover many solutions to everyday complaints like herbs and simple changes in diet and how these ways could have profound effect and have absolutely no side effects. Now I wake up everyday feeling hopeful and excited that my health is continuously improving and that my energy is slowly increasing thus improving the quality of my life.

With Ayurveda, not only have I been cured with most of my complaints but I also gained a deeper knowledge of life and nature. I will continue to embrace and live Ayurveda as a lifestyle and continuously share this knowledge to everyone I encounter. With the help of Ayurveda and Father Jacob I am now a believer that it is possible to attain perfect health. Mabuhay Ayurveda!!!

I was smoking for more than 22 years. In the last five years of those 22 years, I was coughing intensely. I took cough syrup, antibiotics and other expectorant preparations, but it didn’t help. I then decided to consult a doctor at St. Lukes Medical Center. I was diagnosed to have chronic bronchitis. I stopped smoking and continued to take the prescribed western medication. My coughing subsided a little bit but every time I smelt smoke or other pungent odor, I started to cough intensely again. Often times it was coupled with cold, The coughing usually lasted for months.

It became worse when from Cairo. I was seated in the rear portion of the plain on the way back to Philippines. Smokers were all over me. It was one of the freakiest things that happened in my life. My lungs were full of second hand smoke and I was coughing like hell for weeks.

Luckily, during our retreat , a friend invited me to visit an Ayurvedic clinic in Mandaluyong. I met Fr. Jacob who introduces me to the ancient Indian Ayurvedic Medicine. He gave me some tablets color brown which taste like damped earth. After taking his medicines for one week my coughing slowed down and I was greatly relieved. I continue for one month and my coughing stopped. It was amazing.

Now I feel much better, my immune system is not only enhanced but strengthened. I still continue taking his medicines with lemon and huny everyday. I know that prevention is better than cure. I love Ayurveda and I want to share it with everybody.

I often felt dizzy too. Hr prescribed many medicines, continuous check-up for almost one year and I started wearing eye glasses.

Seeing no improvement at all. I consulted another ophthalmologist. This ophthalmologist said my left eye was infected with cataract. He gave many medicines as well and I religiously took them for almost four years, but still I could not feel any relief. I thought I would go blind. In 1993 I became a victim of diabetes and despite taking allophatic medicines my FBS remained 8. My cholesterol level was 475 and blood pressure 160/100. This time, I was feeling dizzy more often than before and I had neck and shoulder pain. I found it very difficult to get sleep. I was worrying very much because I felt that my health was going bad everyday. Then a friend introduced me to Rev. Dr. Jacob. He explained to me what Ayurveda meant and he taught me what eat, how to exercise and what medicines to take.

A week after starting on ayurveda,I stopped all allopathic or Western medicines which I have been taking for ten years without stop, because in that one week the swelling on my eyebrows reduced and the pain diminished.
Now, I am very happy. My sugar level is normal, my cholesterol and BP are normal, my eye sight is good. I feel that I am liberated from my sickness. I had giddiness, difficulty in sleeping and many other problems in connection with my High Blood. MY BP went up to 200/100. Once I had even mild stroke. My wife has undergone treatment with Ayurveda and I noticed that she was getting better. I thought of trying the same. As a military trained man I wanted to follow the program strictly and I did.
After undergoing treatment for two weeks the blood pressure began to drop. I stopped all my previous western medicines. After one month I felt much better and gradually other difficulties began to disappear. After four months of treatment my blood pressure became normal. I continued the Ayurveda medication two months more and I stopped. Now, Its fifteen months I do not have any medicines and there is no problem of blood pressure or any other and I feel very healthy. I want to share this for the benefit of others. I thank God and Rev Dr Jacob, because, now I’m completely cured. Mabuhay Ayurveda.

Centuries before western medicines came into existence, man in different cradles of civilization, had invented some form of treatment using herbs, minerals nd other substances like animal products. Ayurveda is the most ancient and famous of them all. There are also others like Naturopathy, Yoga, Siddha, Acupressure etc, but their origins can be traced to Ayurveda the mother of all healthcare.

The conventional or western medicine is based on physiology of man and pharmacology of substances (drugs)

Ayurveda, on the other hand, is based on the understanding of deep philosophy and mysteries of the Nature.

Preparation on Medicine

That prevention is better than cure is an important principle of Ayurveda. Thus, the preparations of medicines are also based on the holistic aspects of the person – his spiritual, mental and physical aspects. These preparations are either decoctions, tablets, other sweetened and fermented oral medicines called arishta-asawas, oils and ointments, powder, syrups, drops and even injectables.

All are from natural sources, mainly composed of different herbs, single or as a mixture of parts or whole. In certain cases herbs are mixed with other vegetable products like honey, oil, etc., as well as selected minerals and animal products like salt, fat, milk, etc.

According to the specific nature of ailments prescribed herbs are compounded in different proportion to prepare the medicine. In some cases, more then fifty herbs are used. Ayurvedic medicines are prepared generally by cooking the row herbs. Certain preparations are based on abstracts. In that, a combination of medicines rather than “just a medicine” is administered to remedy the root causes including karma. This organic nature and holistic approach of these preparations assures that the treatment does not produce any adverse effect. If anything, it produces only side benefits.

The Four Ends of Human Life

In brief, Ayurveda’s holistic approach to health care is based on the ends of human life. Man basically is immortal. But due to ignorance he is unable to realize that the real Self, which is identified with the intellect, lies within the heart and it is eternal. “He has to wait only as long as he is unrealized; then ,he attains perfection, “ says Chandogya, ne of the scriptures f Indian tradition. Man, simply, has to realize his real nature and his immortal self. AS he develops this ability, he becomes capable of detaching himself from this perishable world and attains perfection.

According to the Vedic teachings, there are four ends of human life. Artha (wealth), Kama (pleasure) Dharma (duty to fulfill) and Moksa or mukti (liberation). Man must find the means to live, and wealth is essential for his needs. In oreder to live and progress, man also needs pleasure in life. So he uses wealth to meet hid needs for pleasure (kama) and to enjoy life.

Using wealth for life and pleasure must, however, be in accordance with duty (Dharma) for man to reach his final destination. For man, life in this world is not the end. It is only a limited phase leading to eternal life. So, he must apply everything towards that goal, realizing that the path, which leads him to his destination is his Dharma.

Liberation from all the material and physical bondage in this perishable and suffering world to attain Moksa or Mukti and experience the state of immortality is the ultimate destination of man. In this final stage he attains perfection. Ayurveda through the healing process aims at the physical, mental and spiritual perfection of man for perfect
happiness.

The whole universe as well as man is based on three basic principles or components called Triguna loosely translated as quality. They are Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. Sattva is the principle or cause for the existence, light etc. Rajas is the principle or cause of action, movement, pain, etc. Tamas is the principle or cause of laziness, steadiness, death and darkness, etc. All these qualities are essential and the character of a person can differ according to the predominance of any one of these qualities over the other. Sattva, Rajas and Tamas produce pleasure, pain and indifference respectively.

When Sattva is predominant in a person, he can be more spiritually elevated and have longevity of life. Persons of this character can be ascetics, philosophers, and artists. If Sattva is less in a person he can have the problem of depression and easily stressed. When Rajas is predominant in a person, he can be more active and energetic. He likes to move and to be moved. With less Rajas, he loses interest in doing anything and appears as moody. He tries to avoid the company of people. On the other hand, when Tama is predominant in a person, he is lazy, sleepy and not having much initiative for anything. He likes darkness rather than light. He likes to eat more but work less.

When these qualities in a person are in the proper balance he is healthy. But if any one or all of them are not in balance he can be considered sick. In this condition, there are prescribed treatments in Ayurveda to correct the character and make a person healthy. The food intake and certain natural medicines with certain prescribed exercises will help these qualities become balance and make a person healthy again.

Panchabhutias and Tridoshas – Five Elements, Three Faults

Based on this belief, Ayurveda defines the human body a composed of five elements- vayu (air), agni (fire), akasa (ether), pritvi (earth) and jel (water). Each part of the body contains all these elements in different measure; and they generate three essential conditions in the human body, either alone or by merging with another. Air and ether together, for example, would make vata (loosely translated in English as air) Fire remains as it is and produces pitha, which is bile, Water and Earth together would make kapha or phlegm. These three conditions – vata, pithe, kapha – assist the body in its functions when they are in correct balance. Any imbalance, on the other hand, leads to an healthy state of the body.

The role of vata is to regulate breathing ,movement of food through the digestive process to separate the waste matter from the essence and discharge as urine and stool, as well as maintain the senses and feelings.

Pitha helps to assimilate the digested food into the body, controls the body’s temperature, maintains its softness and color, and controls appetite, thirst, taste, sight, intelligence and the power of memory.

Kapha helps the muscles and joints with flexibility and strength, which, in turn, generates a sense of general comfort and overall well being.

Subject to the influence of internal or external forces or conditions, any, or al, of the three could be aggravated and cause a imbalance in the body, which in turn would produce a state of uneasiness and lead to sickness. Because of this particular character of Vata, Pitha and Kapha causing aggravation of tridoshas can arise from food intake. The food we eat have six taste – sweet, sour, salt, bitter, hot, astringent. The tastes, which can change according to varying proportions of each item of food, can help correct the imbalance of trishodas. Sweet, sour and salt helps correct vata; sweet astringent and biter are god for correcting pitha; while hot and astringent helps correct kapha.

Everything that God created, he gave to man for his nourishment, well being and fulfillment of his mission on earth. Therefore, it is logical that the remedies for all the problem man might experience be found in the Nature,

In nature exists an order of harmony. All elements in nature from the smallest to the largest, and from the lowest to the highest are composed of different atoms, each arranged in a certain proportion and order for maintaining a perfect equilibrium. That is the order of Nature which God intended.

So when this equilibrium, or balance, is disturbed, there will arise a disorder. In the case f vegetables, animal and humans, such disorders render the body weak and defective and hamper health and growth. This is what we call “diseases” or infirmity. Providing remedy for the disorder is “treatment” and, the means used for the treatment “medicine”

Areas of Man where Disorders Can Occur

Man, As God’s most perfect creation and a micro universe is composed for four aspects – matter, vegetable, animal and spirit or atman (the image of God) These aspects are known as physical, mental and spiritual. And these are the areas where disorder can occur. Since all these aspects are inherent in one being that is man, they are interconnected and cannot b separated from each other. This simply means that if one part of this being is affected by a disorder, all other parts of it will also experience the effect of that disorder. Therefore, any remedy should be for all these aspects – taking man as whole interconnected areas of functions.

In short, the right and effective form of treatment for humans should be holistic that would cover the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the person. This is the basis of Ayurveda, and it achieves all this relying on what is available in the Nature – vegetation, minerals, metals and animals.
